21 Grams
‘When you live in a hierarchal society but everyone’s souls weigh the same’
This work is the origin point from which many of the others emerged. Freud’s initial concept was informed by the shared humanity of the combatants, encapsulated in the notion of the soul. Inspired by the urban legend that the human soul weighs 21 grams, Freud crafted each piece in this set to that measurement, irrespective of ranks, and looks at how this impacts their stature - take the king, who in order to achieve such great heights has made himself vulnerable in the process.
A tension between fragility and functionality is held within the set up, building up to the cathartic moment where the defeated king's is knocked and his crown breaks upon it’s fall, this permanent break impacting his mass irreversibly.
Population Control
Freud plays with perceptions of power. This set is an observation on demography and the distribution of control and comfort. The aristocratic line is maintained with a “penthouse view” of the crowding pawns. They oversee the imbalance and rigidity that leaves no room to play.
Revolution
This set is an evolution of ‘Population Control’, here Freud exposes the fragility of hierarchy with the mass of pawns turning on the outnumbered royal court. The nature of the game has changed and the rules shown superfluous.
